Arundel Festival 2008

The Levellers at Arundel Castle                                                                                                                            "As a live act, they are phenomenal and the acoustics were fabulous as they mixed hits and anthems like a brilliant rendition of One Way and Beautiful Day with some new songs. Storm the castle they did.   A great evening ended with fireworks (or was that The Levellers blasting the castle?) and I left with the words of Beautiful Day in my head "nothing is impossible".                                                                               By Nikki Jeffery -  Worthing Herald review: Aug 2008

Concert Review                                                                                                                                               "Arundel Castle was a beautiful setting for a concert and everyone arrived in high spirits. The Cornish folk band 3 Daft Monkeys delivered a very energetic set that encouraged people to get up and dance. Despite this however Seth Lakeman stole the show for me and his thought provoking and emotive folk music was inspiring , it was easy to get lost in his music. It was no wonder that Lakeman was recently voted Folk singer of the year - utterly fantastic with no room for disappointment. The Levellers were on top form and 20 years of touring as a group together has clearly paid off - they delivered a great performance that still had the feeling of being spontaneous and responding to the crowd. Fireworks after the concert finished off a fantastic evening"                                                                                                                       By Amanda Barnes - Haslemere Times and Mail (Main)

A Midsummer Night's Dream                                                                                                                             "The garden in Arundel Castle - a tribute to Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, nicknamed  "The Collector" - provided a magical and idyllic setting. A joyous, humorous and physical rendition which delighted the audience on a beautiful and peaceful evening".                                                                                             The Brighton Argus (Critic)

A Midsummer Night's Dream                                                                                                                   "Shakespeare bounded back into Arundel festival with an outstanding production of a Midsummer Night's Dream in the perfect setting of Arundel Castle's new Collector Earl's Garden. The fabulous features of the garden cast their own mysterious shadows and added to the other-worldly realm of Shakespeare's unfolding story of fairies, spirits, moon-lit assignations and dreamy hours deep in the woodland. Coming just a few years after the memorable Arundel Festival production of the Dream by the outstanding Tour de Force company, this was a bold choice of play to bring back, but any fears of unfavourable comparisons were quickly dispelled by the quality of the acting."                                                                                   By Roger Green - Littlehampton Gazette

"Rising stars make it a night to remember"                                                                                                 Could there be a better way to spend a summer's evening sitting on the greensward below the Castle walls listening to a 60 piece orchestra and the thrilling singing of two young rising stars of the opera world? Yes, sitting there bathed in warm sunshine. Natasha showed great clarity and a range of emotions - the delicacy of 'O Mia Babbino', the jauntiness of 'Les Filles de Cadiz' and the tenderness of the duet from 'La Boheme' with Alfie Boe, a fine concert in a grand setting.                                                                          'Barrie Jerram - Brighton Argus review: Aug 2007

"Peachy evening... the history and trees setting was inimitable"The weather was mercifully reformed, with a gentle, peachy evening....the history and trees setting was inimitable and pyrotechwhatevers had wallop and dazzle. The Marsh voice, nearly as alluring as her sheathy dress, duly charmed with 'O My Beloved Father' and the more challenging 'Ladies of Cadiz'. A delightful selection from 'West Side Story' and a couple of Neapolitan specials from Alfie. I haven't heard such a goodnatured groundswell all summer.      West Sussex Gazette - Terry Timblick

"Girls Aloud at their best in big party atmosphere"                                                                                          It was Girls Aloud who stole the show on the final night of the Arundel Festival open-air Castle concerts. There was a party atmosphere with Jamelia setting the tone with an energetic performance followed by Shayne Ward playing some of his best songs such as his number one hit 'That's My Goal'. Enter Girls Aloud with their energetic dance routines and a string of top ten hits including the song everyone was waiting for, 'Love Machine'. It was the perfect end to the family fun concert which saw the Irish star woo his fans, Jamelia almost steal the show, were it not for the presence of five young women who had everyone in the crowd singing their hits all of the way to the car park.                                                                    Kelly Frank - West Sussex Gazette review: Aug 2007

"A cut above the rest" - The Barber of Seville - Barons Hall                                                                   Arundel Festival concerts moved out of the grounds into the sumptuous surroundings of the Baronial Hall, the open-air chill gave way to the warmth created by the packed audience for Rossini's great comic opera. An evening of knockabout comedy and glorious singing that soared up to the vast vaulted ceiling and at the end of the evening those same rafters echoed to the audience's applause.                                       Barrie Jerram - Brighton Argus review: Aug 2007

"We were blessed with good weather... I will certainly be spreading the word"                                    Just a line to say many thanks for Saturday evening at Arundel Castle, which was absolutely glorious. I thought all three singers – Alison Moyet, Lucie Silvas and Lemar were in fine voice, the orchestra was brilliant, the two ‘compere’ singers were excellent and of course, we were blessed with good weather, so couldn’t have been better. I will certainly be spreading the word amongst my friends and colleagues for next year. Verity - BSKYB

What the media said:

'Meandering down the hill we turned a corner to see a huge swathe of people colonising the lower lawns of floodlit Arundel Castle. Folding chairs, post-picnic, chilling out in a Pimm's-induced haze it was all a bit surreal with the lawns providing a natural, gentle amphitheatre. The venue was wrapped in dusk and the stage, framed by trees, looked like a distant magical grotto, a fine concert in a grand setting'                         Anne Hill - Brighton Argus review: Aug 2006

'We were most impressed with the variety of entertainment provided by Arundel at this year's music festival.  In particular the evening with Katherine Jenkins that started with the aerial display by a spitfire and a Messerschmitt and the brilliant fireworks at the end both complemented the music and provided great value for the audience'.                                                                                                                 Jo Mitchell (BSKYB)

‘A fine evening, unique romantic lawns setting and a minor miracle of organisation – the feeding of the 4,000 with an irresistibly dazzling selection of thrills, trills and squeals. A stylish kick off indeed to the 10-day culture-fest.                                                                                                                                                          West Sussex Gazette - Terry Timblick
